It was the first official day of summer and it kicked off with a heat wave.
A heat advisory was in effect as temperatures soared past 90 degrees for the first time this year. With high humidity, it felt like it was in the low 100s by the afternoon.
Residents looking to beat the heat visited several official cooling centers throughout the city, including the BronxWorks Morris Innovative Senior Center. Neighborhood firehouses also handed out free spray caps that turn your fire hydrant into a sprinkler.
The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) recommended everyone stay out of the sun, limit physical activity and drink plenty of water.
