City officials hold press conference amid increase of slashings in NYC
Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York City Police Commissioner Bill Bratton held a press conference Tuesday to address the growing number of slashings and stabbings across the city.
Bratton admitted that slashing and stabbings had not been analyzed as closely over the past two-decades as shootings were.
He promised a new tactical approach to combat and re-categorize the slashings as aggravated assault.
Bratton says the revised system will help officers prevent the crimes while on routine patrols.
The commissioner also offered analytic information, which he says the NYPD gathered over a short period of time, but shows greater insight on slashings in NYC.
He says about 60 percent of slashings occur indoors with 30 percent being domestically related. He also says most slashings occur between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
Bratton also says slashing crimes are more difficult to solve because the crimes themselves are not committed by just one classification of people, yet they are committed by everyone and mostly done at random, unlike gang-related crimes.
