Mayor Bill de Blasio and members of the City Council are pushing for updated regulations on coal fire ovens. 

If passed, the revised air quality code would require coal oven owners to install a $10,000 air filter. 

The city claims that airborne particles from coal and wood kill hundreds of people every year. However, restaurant owners argue that the coal used in their ovens burns clean and has minimal effect on air quality. 

The City Council expects to have a hearing on the proposal this week.
