For former prisoners, making the transition back to everyday life can be tough, particularly in a slumping economy. It's why the city's Department of Probation held a drive today to distribute "certificates of relief from disabilities" applications to convicts who show signs of rehabilitation. Dozens lined up for the department's second recent drive. The certificates, once approved by a judge, can slightly ease certain terms of probation to make it easier for convicts to live productive lives. The certificates are for anyone who's been convicted of one felony and/or any number of misdemeanors, but who is making progress. Evidence of rehabilitation include finishing school or obtaining a GED, employment, successful completion of a drug or alcohol program, and living in a stable environment.
