An unofficial street sign hung for two fallen NYPD officers is causing a stir in Bed-Stuy.
A memorial still marks the place where Detectives Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were killed in an ambush shooting. A street sign put up by a Manhattan man is now a constant reminder of what happened at Myrtle and Tompkins avenues.
However, Tompkins Avenue, which runs from Flushing to Fulton, was already co-named in the 90s after former NYPD Detective David Allen. The neighborhood's community board wants the sign for Detectives Liu and Ramos to come down because it is not a legal street sign.
Several people in the community told News 12 Brooklyn that they would like to see some sort of permanent memorial there for the two officers who were killed, but they want a chance to give input on what that memorial will be.
News 12 reached out to the Department of Transportation about the sign and when it will be taken down, but has not yet received an answer.
