Local officials and street safety advocates gathered Wednesday at the intersection where a cyclist was struck and killed by a cement truck.
Police identified the victim as 28-year-old Devra Freelander. Freelander was struck Monday on Boerum Street in Williamsburg, and cyclists say that the street is not a truck route.
On Monday, the mayor asked the Department of Transportation to develop a new cyclist safety plan and directed the NYPD to launch a major enforcement action.
Police tell News 12 that trucks are allowed to go off the route to make a delivery or return to their business as long as they take the most direct route.
They say that's why the driver who hit Freelander did not receive a summons.
Freelander is the 15th cyclist to be killed this year.
