Community leaders came together in East New York to call for the MTA to stop double charging customers who transfer between two stations.

Riders say for many years, if they wanted to transfer from the 3 train at Junius Street station to the nearby L train at Livonia Avenue, they had to pay the fare a second time.

The MTA temporarily introduced a free transfer between the stations as the L train project began. However, community leaders say free transfers should become permanent like the way it is in Manhattan at the Lexington Avenue/63rd Street station.

"We're saying that this is an important hub and that you should not have the ability for people to in one area have a free transfer, where the community is white, and in this community, where it's black, not have that same ability,” says Brooklyn Councilmember Inez Barron.

The MTA says that the free transfer that was introduced during the project will stay in place indefinitely. The company included in its 2020 capital budget plans to construct a connection between the two trains.
