Dozens of community members in Brooklyn Heights on Thursday gathered at the Assumption Church to express their concerns over the city's plan to fix the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.

Much of the opposition has been focused on saving the Brooklyn Promenade, with activists leveraging the iconic attraction in their critique of the city's plan.

Community members say the plan will also have other negative effects on their day-to-day lives.

The city has proposed a temporary highway along the Brooklyn Promenade while urgent repairs are done to the two roadways beneath it.

Critics at Thursday's meeting say not only would they lose the scenic park, it would bring highway traffic way too close to home -- in some cases within a stone's throw from their windows.

Even though at this stage it's only a proposal, city officials have made it clear that this is their preferred plan to fix the BQE. A concrete decision is expected sometime this spring.
