Community weighs in on proposed $1B Amazon facility in Holbrook

Residents had their first opportunity Monday night to weigh in on a proposal to build what would become Amazon’s largest facility on Long Island.

The $1 billion development would create a 4.2 million square foot package origination center near Sunrise Highway and Beacon Drive, adjacent to Costco in Holbrook. If approved, the facility would be Amazon’s 10th location on Long Island and its first package origination center in the region, serving the entire northeast.
Amazon says the facility would help expand same-day delivery capabilities and speed up package processing. The company estimates approximately 300 trucks would travel in and out of the site each day over a 24-hour period. As part of its application to the Town of Islip, Amazon submitted a traffic study and proposed infrastructure improvements aimed at addressing transportation concerns in the surrounding area. Amazon says the project would create about 1,000 jobs on Long Island.
Construction is expected to take between 18 and 24 months if the project receives the necessary approvals. The community meeting was held at the Holbrook Fire Department on Terry Boulevard. Organizers are asking attendees to RSVP in advance.
The Town of Islip tells News 12, "the applicant did submit the traffic study; however, at this point the application has not been deemed complete. The applicant will be updating their submission and once it is deemed complete, the formal review process will start."
Meanwhile, an Amazon spokesperson tells News 12 it is meeting with local community groups, including the MacArthur Business Alliance and the Holbrook Chamber of Commerce. The spokesperson says Amazon looks forward to hearing from the entire community in the future.
