New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli released a new report saying 1 in 8 New Yorkers are facing overdue utility bills since the start of the pandemic.

Since the first quarter of this year, the number of people behind on their bills dropped to 1.2 million while the total amount owed grew to a little under $2 billion.

Officials say the average cost of a utility bill in the state has doubled since the start of the pandemic.
