City officials say the Department of Education?s school expansion efforts just aren?t cutting it in the face of a student population boom.

City Comptroller William C. Thompson released a report Friday detailing the DOE?s inadequacies. He says its planning process to build more schools is broken. Thompson?s report concludes the city is providing new seats in classrooms at a much slower rate than the population is increasing.

Many Brooklyn parents agree with Thompson?s assessment. They say developers concentrate on creating new housing and bringing families into underdeveloped areas. However, they say the problem comes when the city puts little or no thought into where the children will go to school.
