Some Flanders residents are seeking changes to make their community safer for drivers and pedestrians.

They say they are seeing a recent increase in car crashes and DWIs on Flanders Road.

In a two-week span, the Southampton Police Department reported at least five car accidents that have happened either on or near Flanders road. One incident involved a 43-year-old man who was fatally struck by two vehicles.

Some say the problem has been going on for decades and newer traffic signs have not seemed to fix the problem.

"They've put traffic lights, people still don't slow down," says Tara Makis, of Hampton Bays. "I think it's a lot of people not paying attention to what they're doing and speeding."

The Southampton Police Department is aware of the ongoing issue and says that Flanders Road is one of the most dangerous roads in the area and has the most fatal crashes.

The Department of Transportation released a statement saying, "The NYS Department of Transportation currently has open traffic studies alone State Route 24 in Flanders. We cannot comment further while we await the outcome of the ongoing police investigations."
