Today is a big day in Coney Island as 77 apartment units at the newly opened Raven Hall have been allocated to domestic violence survivors and families experiencing homelessness citywide.

State and local officials gathered on the roof of the affordable housing building for a ribbon cutting to celebrate its opening. The new development includes ground floor retail space, a public parking garage and 216 apartment units.

Seventy-seven of those units have been reserved for families formerly experiencing homelessness and survivors of domestic violence.

Representatives say that around 9,000 women children and men cycle through the domestic violence's population around the city each year. New Destiny Housing in collaboration with Georgica Green Ventures will offer supportive services to the new residents who are set to begin moving in this month.

There will be a housing lottery in place for those remaining 139 open units.
