The first outpatient breast milk dispensary in the state of Connecticut is set to open. 

ProHealth Physician’s Glastonbury Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine will open the state's first non-hospital-based breast milk dispensary Saturday, which will make breast milk widely available to mothers and babies across the state.

The facility began collecting donations of breast milk in a 500 oz freezer, but soon milk drop-offs were averaging 400–500 oz—some even 900 oz.

Staff at the facility says they became so overwhelmed by donations that their team had to buy a larger freezer.

They say the life-saving nourishment of breast milk is now closer to those who need it.

A spokesperson for the facility says a prescrption from a medical doctor is needed in order to receive breast milk. 

Staff at ProHealth Physician say most breast milk dispensaries are only located in hospitals and in specialty units such as NICUs.
