An organization is helping Westchester County residents who have had to wait months for appointments to renew their personal documents.
El Salvador Mobile Consulate -- on behalf of the Yonkers Hispanic Cultural Foundation -- held an event at Iglesia San Andres on Saturday to assist with passports and other documents that need processing.
Church administrator Suyapa Hernandez tells News 12 she has been trying to help many Hispanic immigrants get appointments with their home-countries consulates, but it’s proven difficult. She added it's been especially tough to find appointments for people from Mexico, Honduras, and El Salvador.
"Just to get appointments, for the El Salvador consulate, I've been trying for so long," said Hernandez. "For Honduran, don't let me start (get started). Over six months just to get one appointment. It's so difficult."
Organizers say are using every connection they have to get consulates from other Latin-American countries to set up shop at the church. They're also on
the phones trying to set up other services that their people keep telling them
they need -- like assistance with healthcare, green cards and asylum applications.
