After nearly 155 years of helping the needy in the Fort Greene community, the Convent of Mercy will be shutting its doors.
A spokesperson for the Sisters of Mercy, which runs the convent at 273 Willoughby Ave., says the building has numerous structural and safety problems, and it needs $20 million in renovations.
The nine nuns who currently live at the convent will be relocated to other Catholic-run homes in the area.
?They were like family members,? says former convent employee Eva Samuel. ?There were always there in times of need, not just for me but for the whole community, and I?m sad to see them go.?
