Police say a 9-month-old girl was struck by a bullet while her father cleaned an illegal gun in their East New York home, and now both of the girl's parents are facing charges.
The shooting happened at around 4:30 p.m. Saturday on the sixth floor of the Remeeder Houses on Sutter Avenue. Police say 47-year-old Pedro Rosales shot the child, Jessica Rosales, in the hip while cleaning the gun.
Rosales and the baby's mother, 24-year-old Jessica Aguilar, are facing several charges. Rosales is being charged with second-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon. Both parents are facing charges of reckless endangerment and acting in a manner injurious to a child.
The baby is currently in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital after undergoing surgery last night.
Borough President Eric Adams is now calling for raised penalties on illegal gun possession in homes with children under the age of 18. He says that a person could currently face anywhere from 3½ to 15 years in prison. Adams says he wants that number to be raised to five to 25 years.
