Police are investigating a fatal shooting in East New York after witnesses say an officer opened fire and killed a man last night.
Family members say 26-year-old Duane Browne was killed in his home at 943 Schenck Ave. at around 10:30 p.m.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says Browne's half-brother was the target of two armed men, who were threatening him in the basement of the home. He says that Browne went upstairs and returned with a gun as his stepbrother led the assailants to the front door.
Detectives say a police officer responding to the call of a robbery shot Browne once in the chest.
Police say they identified themselves and demanded him to freeze and drop his weapon.
Officials tell News 12 Brooklyn that Browne had 13 prior arrests and his stepbrother had 10 prior arrests, the most recent of which was on Dec. 22.
