As Christmas rapidly approaches, New Yorkers are dealing with record-breaking numbers of positive cases of COVID-19 across the city. Long lines at testing sites are leaving people waiting for hours.
Mayor Bill de Blasio and Mayor-elect Eric Adams came together Sunday to announce the opening of more testing sites across the five boroughs, with the city promising to give out masks to New Yorkers and provide home testing kits to the community-based organizations so they’re more accessible.
The city has already opened 89 new testing locations and plan to open at least 23 more.
One new location on Jefferson Street in Bushwick seemed to have little to no lines when News 12 was there.
Just this Saturday, over 21,000 New York residents tested positive for COVID-19 – a record high for 2021.
De Blasio says on some days they are doing more testing than ever with over 130,00 tests at citywide locations.
Around 13 million people are currently fully vaccinated, and the mayor also stated Sunday that this number is set to increase with new mandates on the way.
The Jefferson Street location has also been offering the vaccine for months now.
