City University of New York (CUNY) leaders are considering a new ban against intimate professor-student relationships.
Chancellor Matthew Goldstein announced the proposal last week following a request from John Jay College officials in Brooklyn. If put into effect, professors caught breaking the rules could lose their jobs.
Goldstein hopes the policy will promote respect, sensitivity and tolerance, but opponents worry it could be difficult to enforce and say it goes beyond CUNY's rights to oversee relationships.
Each CUNY school now has until May 1 to share its views on the ban before it goes before the Board of Trustees in June.
