The failed bomb attack near Gracie Mansion over the weekend is now fueling debate about how the NYPD handles both terrorism threats and protests.

Despite the incident, Mayor Zohran Mamdani says he still believes the department’s Strategic Response Group, known as the SRG, should be disbanded.

Authorities say two men are now facing federal terrorism charges after investigators say they threw explosive devices near protesters gathered outside the mayor’s official residence on Saturday.

The Strategic Response Group was on standby in a backup capacity as protests unfolded near Gracie Mansion that day.

The specialized NYPD unit was created in 2015 and is trained to respond to large-scale events, including protests, civil unrest, and potential terrorism threats.

Retired NYPD Detective Phil Grimaldi says the unit plays an important role in managing dangerous situations involving large crowds.

“The Strategic Response Group is a critical asset within the NYPD,” Grimaldi said.

He added that the unit is specifically trained to respond to situations involving mass arrests and major public gatherings.

“Mayor Mamdani remains committed to disbanding the Strategic Response Group, and the administration is currently working with the police department on how to do so in a manner that both keeps New Yorkers safe and protects First Amendment rights," said City Hall spokesman Sam Raskin.
