New York City’s delivery workers are asking the city for a guarantee minimum wage.  

A proposal from the city’s Department of Consumer and Workers Protection could guarantee these workers a set wage of $19.96 per hour, which includes compensation for personal expenses for the city’s over 60,000 delivery workers.  

This rate is lower than the $23.82 hourly wage that was proposed in 2022, which the DCWP says is because of workers who deliver through multiple apps.

The Workers Justice Program has backed a minimum wage push for these “deliveristas” through rallies that date back to November of 2022.  

“We’re concerned that after two years organizing and fighting, deliveristas, to this day, don’t have access to a minimum pay,” said Ligia Guallpa, executive director of the Workers Justice Program. “A deliverista gets up in the morning with the hope to get a good day of tips in order to keep doing this work and to be able to provide for their families.” 

The DCWP is scheduled to hold a hearing on April 7 and is accepting comments online.

If the $19.96 rate is approved, they say that rate would kick off in 2025, with the hourly rate of $17.96 starting this year.
