Demonstrators rallied in Downtown Brooklyn Wednesday against Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett and claim the confirmation hearings underway are rushed while Barrett is not a good fit for the job.
Demonstrators were seen holding up signs that said, "Unrig the courts."
Dozens of community organizations are demanding the Senate delay the process to confirm a new Supreme Court justice, as confirmation hearings for Judge Amy Coney Barrett continued Wednesday.
The group says they feel the process of filling the seat left vacant by Ruth Bader Ginsburg should wait until after the election. They say rushing destroys the legitimacy of the court.
The group also voiced their disapproval of Barrett as a nominee, saying her beliefs on several issues, such as reproductive rights, oppose the human rights that they are fighting for.
"Reproductive rights are far more extensive than simply the right to have an abortion. To have bodily autonomy, and by the way, it is about the right to have in vitro fertilization which is something that Amy Coney Barrett disagrees with and believes should be criminalized,” a demonstrator told News 12.
Some claimed that they are worried about the future of the Affordable Care Act based on Barrett’s academic writings about ACA rulings.
However, for the opposing groups who think she’s a good fit for the job, they say that if chosen they feel Barrett will make unbiased decisions.
"I think she'll put her integrity, the rule of law, and the Constitution, beforehand. Everybody has biases, but again it's more about she understands the Constitution, she understands the rule of law. I think she'll side by case-by-case basis,” a demonstrator told News 12.
Wednesday marks the third day for confirmation hearings for Barrett. Once the hearings are over, the nomination will move to the Senate for a vote.
