(AP) - A New York City worker has died after an accident at a Brooklyn sewage treatment plant.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg says that Gennaro Montello suffered fatal injuries when the steel supports of a temporary conveyor belt collapsed and fell on him.
A second worker, Joseph DiGiovanni, was hurt while trying to save Montello. He was in stable condition Friday.
Bloomberg said in a statement: "We typically only think of uniformed officers putting themselves on the line to serve the public.
"Today's accident is a tragic reminder of how many others serve our city in challenging environments and how our city could not run without them."
Montello, who was 45, leaves a wife, Donna, and two children, Gennaro and Brianna.
He had worked for the Department of Environmental Protection since 2001.
