At the busy intersection of Lincoln Road and Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, commuters grew tired of standing while waiting for the bus, so they decided to take matters into their own hands.
A now-viral photo shows residents sitting on their own police barricade turned makeshift bench at the stop, turning a small act of frustration into a big conversation about transit comfort in New York City.
“It’s all over TikTok, everybody’s seen it,” said commuter Janiya Page. “They need a seat, every stop needs a seat.”
But as of Friday, only pieces of the bench remain. The makeshift seating was removed, leaving riders once again standing as they wait.
“The best thing they could do was just leave it, but they took it away,” said commuter Andrew Kantor. “Now there’s nothing to sit down on, so it affects everybody.”
City officials, however, say the message was received loud and clear. In response to bus stops like Lincoln Road and Flatbush Avenue and bus routes where most stops do not currently have seating options available for riders, Mayor Eric Adams announced a $40 million initiative to install benches at 8,750 eligible bus stops citywide.
“Oh, I feel great about that,” said commuter Anita Whitfield. “It’s just convenient to be able to sit down!”
According to the Department of Transportation, installations will begin next month, with nearly two-thirds of seatless bus stops set to get new benches. A DOT spokesperson also confirmed that the Lincoln Road and Flatbush Avenue stop will be among the list of bus stops to receive new seating.
The DOT tells News12 that riders can also request benches for other locations through its official website.
