Officials gathered in downtown Brooklyn Wednesday to mark the 10-year anniversary of the state?s first domestic violence court.
Officials say New York is now home to 60 domestic violence courts and 11 more will soon open. Judges applaud the integrated system of these courts, saying one judge can handle criminal, divorce and custody proceedings at the same time. Previously, families had multiple court dates.
While court officials say domestic violence has not increased over the years, they have managed about 50,000 cases. The courts work to quickly assist families with housing and other needs.
