Close to a dozen domestic violence groups are receiving funding to help continue to support victims and their families during the coronavirus pandemic.
Organizations are receiving checks from Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson to help continue their work to stop the cycle of abuse.
“Women need to know what their rights and options are and whatever is available to them and our staff is there,” said Gibson.
It’s part of the DOVE Initiative, a citywide program serving victims of physical, sexual and domestic violence.
Advocates say calls to the city’s domestic abuse hotline spiked 19% between April and September, compared to the same period last year.
They say COVID-19 has caused a host of challenges for victims facing a greater risk of abuse from their partners.
Domestic violence services are being provided both remotely and in person, and a daily outreach continues in communities to support vulnerable populations.
In total, $223,000 in funding was given to 10 domestic violence groups in the Bronx to help victims and their families, which advocates say is needed now more than ever.
