The Bedford Stuyvesant Early Childhood Development Center has yet to open its doors for the school year after classes began on Thursday.

The facility, located within the Kingsborough NYCHA complex, is facing significant repair needs, preventing it from enrolling any children for the school year.

According to the center's executive director, Angela Terry, the issues have been ongoing for months. Despite the urgency, the facility is still waiting on major repairs to be completed by NYCHA.

Leaks, ceiling damage, and plumbing issues

Upon visiting the ECDC site, classrooms sit empty, only filled with stacked baby chairs and barren walls. The center, which serves children from the local community, hasn’t been able to enroll any students this year due to water leaks, collapsing ceilings, and faulty plumbing.

“We first requested repairs from NYCHA back in June,” said Terry, who has been overseeing efforts to get the center operational. She says NYCHA patched the ceiling, but Terry says they "hired our own plumbers after they told us they couldn’t find one.”

When plumbers inspected the pipes in the building's basement, they found additional concerns.

A NYCHA spokesperson tells News 12 they're looking into the issue.

Funding at risk without enrollment.

As a nonprofit receiving some funding from the Department of Education, enrollment is crucial for the Bedford Stuyvesant ECDC to continue receiving necessary funding.

"DOE will reach out and ask, ‘Why don’t you have children enrolled or a waitlist?’” Terry explained. She said that the DOE had already contacted her earlier this summer.
