The Department of Transportation (DOT) is promising to make safety changes to the Bronx River Parkway after seven family members died in an accident on Sunday.
Commissioner Joan McDonald says new concrete barriers will be installed on the outside travel lane on three viaducts that elevate the parkway.
One of those viaducts is 60 feet over the Bronx Zoo, where the minivan landed while carrying three generations of a Bronx family. Police say the vehicle hit the median, crossed three lanes and hit a 2-foot-high concrete curb before flying over a 4-foot guardrail.
McDonald says crews started working Wednesday morning on interim actions to make the road safer, including signs and striping on the highway. While the barriers are being installed, the state is warning all drivers that the legal speed limit is 35 mph through construction zones.
