The city’s Department of Transportation has proposed a plan to make the intersection of Church Avenue and Ocean Parkway safer.
Pedestrians, cyclists, cars, buses and even 18-wheeler trucks all converge at the dangerous intersection. It also is the start of the Prospect Expressway.
According to the city DOT, there were three traffic deaths at the intersection in the last 10 years, including one this past February.
Some problems the DOT has diagnosed is too many vehicles turning every which way, many onto the expressway, and too far of a distance for pedestrians to cross.
Its solutions include a barrier between a new turn lane and new straight lane, and eliminating left turns from Church Avenue onto the southbound Ocean Parkway. It would also expand the curbs and medians to reduce the distance to cross.
The DOT plans on gathering community feedback through the winter. If all goes as planned, construction would start sometime in the spring or summer.
