The city’s Department of Transportation sought feedback on upcoming changes to the Brooklyn Queens Expressway with a walking tour this morning in Dumbo.

The walk was led by the group Transportation Alternatives and focused on the city-owned central portion of the BQE. The event aimed to hear ideas from community members and elected officials on how to overhaul the deteriorating structure.

The city plans to use federal grants recently announced by the Biden administration to revamp the central part between Atlantic Avenue and Sand Street. However, some advocates, officials and community members say the plan will only amplify the long-term health and environmental impacts of the BQE. Due to this, they are calling on the city and state to work together on a plan that includes the entire corridor.

Another walking tour event set for March 18 will focus on the south part of the BQE. It is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at the Cough Triangle in Carrol Gardens.

  "We want a 21st century plan that envisions what our transportation and infrastructure needs are for the next 100 years, not the past 100 years," says one community member.
