New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg unveiled the "25 days to 25 miles per hour" public awareness campaign Wednesday to remind drivers to slow down.
The City Council recently passed a bill that will lower the limit on city roads from 30 to 25 mph, a bill officials say will drastically save lives.
Amy Cohen, who lost her 12-year-old son in front of their Park Slope home last October, says the message is everyone should drive like their child's life depends on it, because it may.
The new speed limit will go into effect Nov. 7. It affects all city streets, including those that do not have a posted speed limit.
The DOT says it will also post signs reminding drivers of the change near several entrances to the city.
The new speed limit is the next step in the city's Vision Zero plan, which started lowering speed limits on arterial city roads earlier this year.
Drivers in the borough have mixed feelings on whether the change will be beneficial. Some say it has the potential to save lives.
Others feel that decreasing the speed limit by 5 mph is not going to make a difference.
