A beloved mother in the Dyker Heights community was struck and killed by a vehicle on Tuesday. Now, her family and the community are calling for donations to help support her 14-year-old son.
The victim, 52-year-old Xiaohong Chen, was the sole provider of the family and her husband, Wei Zhao, was seen in tears on Friday as he shared the moments from one of the hardest days of his life.
Chen left the family’s home to pick up food and was struck and killed by a pickup truck driver at the intersection of 13th and Bay Ridge avenues. She later died at Maimonides Hospital.
The victim's father and son say they lived paycheck-to-paycheck as Chen worked tirelessly as a seamstress to provide for the family.
