A shop owner in Flatbush was arrested by the NYPD due to unsafe conditions in his business with e-bike batteries laying around.
Officials say they found several violations in the shop last Friday. They say the store was selling e-bikes without certification, storing loose battery cells and violating other fire code rules. A total of 15 lithium-ion batteries and multiple e-bikes were on sale without certification.
The fire department says they gave the same shop over violations back in September 2023 and in January. They say these batteries have the potential to explode and trap people in fire, and that the store sits below several apartments.
"The safety of New Yorkers and our members is our top priority. Our FDNY fire marshals and the bureau of fire prevention will continue to crack down on the sellers of these uncertified and dangerous devices that will continue to remind people of the dangers they compose,” said FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh.
