On the eve of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and during New York City Peace Week, residents in East New York are calling for a renewed effort to end gun violence.
The National Action Network Brooklyn East chapter were joined by community leaders and clergy to pray on the streets of East New York on Sunday, saying that divine intervention is needed to stop gun violence.
"We need to bring for prayer back in the homes - that's where it starts. We want parents to pray for the children before they go to bed, start having some curfews for their children, bring the children to church where they can be prayed over," says Rev. Lea O'Neal, founding pastor of Friends Christian Church.
The leaders all say they have an action plan during New York City Peace Week in honor of King's legacy of non-violence.
The emergency plan of action includes prayer vigils, going to the locations where people have died at the hands of guns in East New York and offering public awareness about gangs.
New York City Peace Week runs from Jan. 15 to Jan 22.
