Members of Community Board 5 in East New York protested against Gateway Mall management Friday for not being inclusive of their community.
Residents are calling for more programming with local vendors, schools and other organizations. They say they've been trying to meet with mall management about economic empowerment for shoppers for three years, but have not yet met.
They say that nearly 90% of the district's 180,000 residents are people of color and that the shops don't reflect the community.
"When the voice of the community is not being heard by an economic powerhouse in our district, it doesn't make sense for you to sit on the sidelines," said Deputy District Manager of Community Board 5, Keron Alleyne.
News 12 reached out to Gateway Mall management but have not yet heard back.
