Tenants who park in the an East New York garage at 1447 Sutter Ave., say they’ve been trekking through sewage water and fecal matter since Thursday morning.
Frank Johnson, who has lived in the building for over 10 years, says the scene is both remarkable, and regrettably, common. “It’s horrible in here, it’s like a river,” he said. “It’s toxic - no one knows what this stuff is; all of this slop.”
Residents living in the adjoining apartment building at 628 Eldert Lane say this isn’t a one-time issue. Many claim flooding and foul conditions have happened before.
Crystal Turner, who often parks with her young children, says navigating the mess is both unsafe and unacceptable.
“This is not something that doesn’t occur on a normal basis,” she said. “To have to walk through sewage, feces, pee water - to walk my 3-year-old son through to get to my car just to take him to school."
Data from The Department of Housing Preservation and Development show 16 open violations and 171 complaints tied to their building. Residents say paying $200 a month to park in conditions they consider hazardous makes little sense.
Andrea, another tenant, was blunt about the situation: “It’s too expensive! Especially because these building are supposed to be low income buildings."
Turner, who has parked in the garage for more than a decade, says she’s reached her limit. “This is unacceptable. These people want their money, but they never want to fix anything.”
Joseph Baret, the building manager, responded to News 12, saying crews are diligently working to fix the problem.
“We have plumbers on site doing the work that needs to be done to get the issue resolved as soon as possible,” Baret said.
Wave Crest Management tells News 12 that they "identified the issue very early this morning" to "remove the cap from the sewer line, redirecting water away from residents' apartments and into the garage."
Additionally, representatives state that "third-party contractors are clearing the clog and power jetting the sewer line to help prevent future occurrences" and both "staff and contractors will thoroughly clean the garage to ensure resident safety, with all work anticipated to be completed by the end [of Thursday].
