Residents on Hendrix Street in East New York are raising the alarm on frequent speeding – including a vehicle that struck the side mirror of a parked car Sunday afternoon.
Ellis Washington told News 12 that he frequently sees cars speeding over 50 mph down the street and blowing through a stop sign that is at the end of the one-way street. He says the street had speed bumps in the past that were removed due to repaving and hopes the Department of Transportation can reinstate them to protect senior citizens and children in the area.
"We have a culture, or subculture of wanting to race these cars down the street with high speed and it is a real danger for this area,” said Washington. “We saw that car get hit today. Thank God there was not someone getting out of the car."
Another resident, Rudolph Winter, who has lived on the street for 30 years, says he worries about the dangers that the cars pose to pedestrians.
"Somone is speeding, they get hit, they lose control…they have no respect for the road or others with this driving," he said.
Residents say they plan to lodge a 311 complaint and a report against the driver who struck the vehicle.
News 12 reached out to the Department of Transportation for comment. A spokesperson said it is open to community feedback but noted that no injuries or deaths were reported on the street.
