Residents in Williamsburg don't have to travel far to get some sand between their toes.
The state just finished making over the East River Park. Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey unveiled the renovations just in time for the weekend.
Several feet of the park's beach and lawn was lost over the last decade due to erosion.
Workers rebuilt the stone buffer to prevent erosion from coastal storms, replenished the beach sand and created a new kayak launch. The project cost just over $500,000.
One-third of the park was flooded when Superstorm Sandy hit in 2012, so dry wells were installed to collect storm water runoff in the event of heavy rain.
