East Rockaway High School marks its 90th 'Rock Rivalry' competition

For 90 years, East Rockaway High School has come alive with one of Long Island’s most unique traditions - Rock Rivalry!
According to students, Rock Rivalry isn’t just a competition - it’s a cornerstone of the community that binds creativity, teamwork, and school pride. Born in 1936, the same year the high school opened, Rock Rivalry is more than just one event. Each grade prepared for over six weeks to battle it out in contests like sports-night, volleyball and quiz bowl.
But the highlight is the legendary "Entrance" performances - 30‑minute shows written, built, choreographed and performed entirely by the students. This year's "entrances" premiered in the high school auditorium on Friday, March 13.
Senior Megan Acuti says Rock Rivalry brings the student body together, creating new friendships.
"During Rock Rivalry season, it kind of becomes our whole lives, and it really is the biggest sense of community you could have," Acuti said.
And there is also "Stand" where students create a concession stand to sell snacks at the evening performance. Money raised helps fund each class’s prom and senior trip.
