An edible schoolyard started four years ago at P.S. 216 has bloomed into a half-acre organic garden.
The nearly 600 students do a lot of the work themselves as part of a program called Edible Schoolyard NYC. The students tend to the garden twice a month and also receive cooking lessons for healthy meals.
The garden used to be a cement parking lot, but now features a greenhouse, chicken coop and is filled with fresh herbs, vegetables and fruits.
Students say they hope the crop list keeps growing. Organizers add that they've noticed improvements in grades and attitudes since the program started.
