Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) officials are cracking down on subway riders who misuse the emergency exits.MTA officials say too many people are using the emergency exit gates to get a free ride. Police say they will now be issuing $60 tickets to violators. Some riders say they use the gates because they cannot fit through the turnstiles with baby carriages or luggage. Others say if the gate is open and there are no police officers in sight, they take advantage of a free ride. The agency installed the exits to enable a fast evacuation system in the event of an emergency. The MTA is also launching an ad campaign on buses and subways to make commuters aware of the rules.
