Thousands of Brooklyn and city kids rely on crossing guards each day. However, there are reportedly more than 100 empty crossing guard positions across the city.

According to a Daily News report, the empty positions could threaten the safety of Brooklyn and city children. There are currently 25 open jobs in Brooklyn. The report states that police say finding candidates to fill the part-time NYPD jobs is difficult. Police say the guards are required to show up twice a day, even though it is a part-time position.

The police union claims the city has made no real effort to attract guards in more than a decade. It is now calling on the city to step up recruiting and expand the number of crossing guard spots by more than 270 positions.
