Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams is putting some pressure on Mayor Bill de Blasio to make sure that activity is a priority at New York City public schools.
Adams says that many Brooklyn schools don't have a place where students can have gym class.
The converted gymnasium at P.S. 147 in Bushwick contains things like a telephone booth, large support columns, metal cabinets and radiators.
"The Department of Education of the City of New York receives a failing grade for our children. Not only is it inadequate in size, but it is also a safety hazard," says Adams.
Adams say he is concerned about using the gym as a space for kids because of the radiators - he calls it an accident waiting to happen.
"A child can not only get hurt from hitting the metal, but they can burn themselves on the exposed piping," he says.
Adams released a survey showing that one out of every six schools in Brooklyn has no dedicated gym space.
He says that the mayor is dedicating $385 million in capital funding to create space for gyms, but he says the city needs to move faster to get this done.
Adams is recommending that the Department of Education appoint someone that would be dedicated only to school athletics.
