It was a battle for Bronx bragging rights as the Cardinal Spellman High School boys? basketball team hosted Cardinal Hayes High Tuesday night.
The Spellman Falcons entered the game with a (5-6) overall record, having lost two of their three last games. However, the boys weren?t completely discouraged because earlier in the season, they won the prestigious McClancy tournament.
Hayes entered the game with a much better mentality, having just defeated their arch rivals Mount St. Michael with a 62-61 win in overtime. They were looking for their fourth straight win on Tuesday.
Hayes? star point guard Jeffrey Paulino held his reputation up, scoring 20 points throughout the game and assisting Hayes to a 36-32 lead after the third quarter. However, Falcons star Chris Manhertz scored two of his 12 inside, bringing the Falcons to a 39-38 lead with only 5:14 left.
Paulino played strong throughout the fourth quarter, helping Hayes to a 46-45 lead with only 5.3 seconds left. The Falcons had one final shot at the win, and player Robert McIntosh was able to score the winning basket with just seconds left. The Falcons won the game, 48-46.
?Coach just said, ?Rob get open,? ? one of my teammates on my team said, ?Rob you gotta make it,? and so I just caught it and I ran up, looked, shot it and it went in,? McIntosh said. He scored nine points during the game.
