Loved ones are calling for an investigation into the safety of the Bronx River Parkway following a horrific accident that killed seven people Sunday.
According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), the section of road where a minivan flew over the guardrail, plunging into a ravine, is unsafe and not up to modern standards. It says dangerous aspects include narrow lanes, steep hills, tight turns and no breakdown lane.
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. visited the home of one of the victims Monday to speak with mourning family members. He says they want to make sure that a similar accident never happens again.
According to police, the driver of the 2004 Honda Pilot, Maria Gonzalez, was going 68 mph in a 50 mph speed zone when she clipped the median. They say she may have overcorrected, giving the car enough velocity to fly over the southbound lanes and the guardrail.
The other victims have been identified as Gonzalez's daughter, 10-year-old Jocelyn Gonzalez and her sister, 39-year-old Maria Nunez. Nunez's daughters, 7-year-old Niely Rosario and 3-year-old Marly Rosario, and their grandparents, Jacob Nunez, 85, and Ana Julia Martinez, 81, were also killed.
The medical examiner determined the cause of death for all victims was blunt force trauma sustained from the impact of the crash.
