An intersection in Brooklyn is attracting new scrutiny after an 8-year-old boy riding his bicycle was struck and killed over the weekend.
Transportation Alternatives, a bicyclist and pedestrian advocacy group, says it tracked 39 accidents - 28 pedestrian and 11 bicycle - at the intersection of Livingston Street and Boerum Place between 1995 and 2005.
On Saturday, Alexander Toulouse was riding his bike with his father when witnesses say a mail truck making a turn struck and killed the boy.
Other intersections in Downtown Brooklyn have also been identified as problem areas. A few intersections in the area have accounted for 110 pedestrian accidents and 21 bicyclists being hit.
The city's Department of Transportation says that whenever there is a fatal accident at an intersection, an investigation is launched to determine if changes are needed.
