One person is dead and another is in critical condition following an elevator collapse in the Bronx, according to the FDNY.
The incident happened around 8:15 a.m. at 20 Bruckner Blvd., a building four stories high that is under construction. An elevator that was in between floors with two workers inside moving construction debris suddenly fell to the bottom floor, according to investigators.
Police found two men unconscious in the elevator when they arrived. One man died from his injuries. The second worker, a 29-year-old-man, is in critical condition at Lincoln Hospital.
Workers like Dario Huartan say people had been working on the elevator Tuesday.
“I’m on that elevator every day,” Huartan says. “To take material up, lunch, a lot of us are constantly using that elevator. So now I’m wondering what went wrong with the inspectors in charge of checking the elevator.”
The FDNY says the construction building has active permits for elevator work.
Construction at the building has been stopped, and workers are not allowed inside until investigators figure out what went wrong and are sure it is safe to return.
A family member of the victim in critical condition was at the scene hoping for the best.
“I just hope my family member makes it through,” they say. “This is truly horrible. I’m praying he will.”
Employees are pleading for answers from GDI Construction Site and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
News 12 is told the Department of Buildings is still investigating what caused the elevator to collapse.
OSHA tells News 12 that it is aware of the incident and will be issuing a statement.
GDI Constructions released a statement, saying in part: “What happened at 20 Bruckner Blvd. was a terrible incident and everyone on site is completely devastated. Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and loved ones of the individual who passed away and our thoughts are with the person who is in critical condition. We are working closely with the local authorities as we undergo a full investigation.”
