Firefighters say multiple people were hospitalized, including a 2-month-old, after a fire broke out in Canarsie Saturday morning.
The FDNY says they arrived at the house fire at 716 E. 89th St. around 9:30 a.m. They say the fire started under the stairs in the cellar and rapidly spread to the first and second floors before becoming a 2-alarm blaze.
Family members inside the home say they heard people shouting “fire” as they jumped out the back window to escape the smoke and flames.
While some family members were able to escape, a mother and her 2-month-old, 1-year-old and 5-year-old children were trapped inside.
Firefighters were able to rescue the group from the building.
Authorities say the 2-month-old was taken to the hospital. The family says they are waiting to find out about the infant’s condition.
Seven people were taken to hospitals, with five of them in serious condition. Two firefighters were also hurt as they battled the flames.
The fire was placed under control around 10:20 a.m., but the block remained closed off.
Fire marshals are investigating the cause of the fire as they try to clean the debris out of that home.
