Two FDNY firefighters received the Medal of Valor from President Joe Biden, one of them for his actions during a 2022 fire in the Bronx.
Lt. John Vanderstar, a New York City firefighter, is receiving the Medal of Valor for rescuing a mother and child from a burning apartment in Concourse Village on Oct. 23, 2022.
Separately, New York City firefighter Brendan Gaffney is being honored for braving an apartment building fire to save an unconscious child and a pregnant woman.
The firefighters are two of eight first responders receiving the Medal of Valor. Biden is also awarding the Medal of Honor to seven military recipients, six posthumously.
